MacOS comes with ksh. They say, every photograph holds a lot of unforgettable memories! Yes, we totally agree to this! But do you know that those same photos store a lot of personal information about you that can be accessed by anyone when you share a picture, no matter what mode. I got my first lesson in binary arithmetic for use in computers from my Uncle in 1960. The first computer graphics programs that I used were ones I wrote myself. I did not get started writing shell scripts until 1985. I think it'd be easier to learn to speak Greek. GUIs are so slow CLIs give your fingers superpowers You obviously never had the opportunity to fall in love with a Unix shell. The most famous of all, Lightroom, destroys some EXIF data for no apparent reason. One application's tags might not even appear in a different application. There's a lot of variation in what various applications consider orthodox. Don't see UI for EXIF edit though, nor does it seem to have a "bulk" edit mechanism. I just realized XnViewMP will edit IPTC and XMP fields. There's ExifToolGUI for Windows but it doesn't run on MacOS. On the other hand, exiftool is the most trustworthy application in its area, IMO. That one definitely ties with Wordstar 5 for "Most User-Hostile Software Application", and I used Wordstar back in 1989 on MS-DOS. That queries for these fields and then puts them into a series of photos in succession. If I wrote a shell script, it would be something for a school play about a family of happy shells down by the seashore. In XMP there is effectively no character limit. This field is limited by the IIM format to about 2000 characters. Typically, editorial images come with complete caption text, while advertising images may not. The amount of detail included will depend on the image and whether the image is documentary or conceptual. Geographic location details should also be entered in the Location fields. It can include people’s names, their role in the action, the location. The Description field, often referred to as a ‘caption' is used to describe the who, what (and possibly where and when) and why of what is happening in the photograph. The EOS R5 will populate the IPTC description tag, as will exiftool using the -description command line option. There is also AnyEXIF in the Apple App application store, $20. I'm not sure if you use hierarchical keywords, which are sort of non standard, but those applications can all deal with them as well as IPTC keywords. Other options if you don't want to use Terminal are Graphic Converter, Photo Mechanic, or Bridge. You could write a shell script that queries for these fields and then puts them into a series of photos in succession. Also I'm not sure Description as such is an official EXIF or IPTC tag. I don't believe Title, Description, and Keyword exist in EXIF until you add them. I mainly need to update the Title, Description and Keywords fieldsĪny alternatives to bulk edit EXIF data for a mac?Įxiftool -Xmp:LocationShownCountryName='United States' *.JPGĮxiftool -"description=American Coots (Fulica americana) at Lake Thunderbird in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on February 3, 2023" /Users/jrm/photos/2023Jan22/IMG_3046c.JPG I used to use Stockuploader for Mac to bulk update EXIF data for mac in order to bulk update images for stock photography websites.
